How Far Before an Event Should You Schedule Botox or Filler?

For most people, Botox should be scheduled about two weeks before an event, while dermal filler deserves at least three to four weeks. If it’s your first treatment, or you’re preparing for a wedding, professional photos, or another major occasion, booking four to six weeks ahead gives you more breathing room. Botox needs time to reach its full effect, and filler often looks a little swollen before it fully settles.

At Dignity Medical Aesthetics & Wellness, we encourage patients to tell us about important dates during the consultation so we can recommend a treatment timeline that fits their plans. Most people return to normal activities right away, but planning ahead means you’re less likely to be worrying about a small bruise, early swelling, or whether your final result will be ready in time.

The Best Timing for Botox and Filler Before an Event

For routine planning, book Botox about 14 days before the event and dermal filler three to four weeks before. For a first treatment, aim for four to six weeks whenever your schedule allows.

The exact timing depends on the area being treated, the amount of product used, your past response to injections, and how important the event is to you. Someone getting a small amount of Botox before a dinner has a different planning window than someone trying lip filler for the first time before a wedding.

A consultation should come before the treatment date whenever possible. That gives your provider time to look at your facial movement, discuss your goals, and decide whether Botox, filler, or another treatment makes sense.

Why Botox Should Usually Be Scheduled Two Weeks Ahead

Dignity Medical Aesthetics notes that Botox may begin taking effect within about 24 hours but is often not completely noticeable for seven to ten days. The practice also prefers a two-week follow-up for first-time patients so the result and dosing can be assessed.

That two-week window gives the treatment time to soften expression lines and settle into a natural result. It also leaves room for a provider-approved adjustment if one area needs a small amount of additional product.

Booking Botox two or three days before an event is a gamble. You might look completely normal at the injection sites, but the treatment probably won’t have reached its final effect. There’s also a chance of temporary redness, tenderness, swelling, or bruising.

If you’ve had Botox several times and know how your face responds, your provider may be comfortable with a shorter timeline. Even then, giving yourself the full two weeks is usually less stressful.

Why Dermal Filler Deserves More Time

Filler works differently. The added volume is visible right away, but what you see on the first day includes the treatment itself and some degree of swelling. According to the FDA’s guidance on dermal fillers, common side effects such as swelling and bruising usually appear shortly after treatment and may take anywhere from a few days to several weeks to resolve.

This is why filler should usually be scheduled earlier than Botox. Mild swelling can temporarily make the lips, cheeks, or chin look fuller than expected. One side may appear slightly different from the other while the tissue settles. A small bruise may also stand out in professional photographs.

Most normal activities can often be resumed quickly, although the American Society of Plastic Surgeons advises avoiding intense physical activity for the first 24 to 48 hours after filler to limit swelling and bruising. Follow the instructions from your own injector.

Three to four weeks gives the initial swelling time to fade and lets you see the result more clearly. It also creates time for a follow-up if your provider recommends one.

Different Filler Areas Can Settle Differently

A small lip treatment doesn’t necessarily follow the same timeline as cheek or chin filler.

Lips move constantly and can show swelling clearly during the first few days. Dignity Medical Aesthetics states that common side effects of Volbella lip filler include bruising, swelling, tenderness, redness, discomfort, and itching, with these effects typically settling within two weeks.

Cheek filler may look polished soon after treatment, but temporary puffiness or tenderness can still occur. Chin and jawline filler may involve swelling that changes how defined the area appears early on.

The product matters too. A filler selected for subtle lip definition behaves differently from a more robust filler used to restore cheek volume. The amount injected, your anatomy, and your healing response all affect the timeline. Another person’s day-three photo doesn’t predict yours.

Give Yourself More Time Before a Wedding

A wedding or major family photo deserves a wider buffer than an ordinary weekend plan. For these events, schedule the consultation four to six weeks ahead, especially if you’re new to injectables.

A conservative plan often makes the most sense before an important event. You want enough time to see how the treatment looks in your own face, not just how it looked in a saved photo or on someone you follow online.

First-time patients don’t yet know how easily they bruise, how much their lips swell, or how quickly Botox becomes noticeable for them. Once you understand your response, future appointments become easier to time.

Avoid planning a first filler appointment immediately before a flight or a packed week of pre-event commitments. Leave room to follow aftercare instructions and contact your provider if something doesn’t feel right.

What If Your Event Is Less Than Two Weeks Away?

Don’t assume you need to rush into treatment. A consultation may still be useful, but the best recommendation could be to wait until after the event.

With less than two weeks, Botox may start working before the date, but it may not have reached its final result. Filler may look good quickly, yet swelling or bruising could still be visible. There’s no way to guarantee that your skin will be photo-ready on a specific day.

This also isn’t the moment to push for extra product to create a faster change. More filler doesn’t settle faster. If the timeline is too tight, ask about simple skincare, makeup planning, or postponing treatment until the calendar is less demanding.

How to Lower the Chance of Bruising and Swelling

Follow the instructions from your medical provider rather than a generic online checklist. Before the appointment, share your medications, supplements, allergies, medical conditions, prior reactions, and recent illnesses. Let the office know about dental work, vaccinations, travel, or another cosmetic procedure scheduled near the treatment date.

Some medications and supplements affect bleeding or bruising, but don’t stop anything prescribed without speaking with the clinician who manages it.

After treatment, avoid rubbing or pressing the area unless your provider tells you to. Follow instructions about exercise, heat, makeup, alcohol, skincare products, and sleeping position.

Call the treating office if swelling, pain, skin color, or other symptoms seem unusual. Severe pain, vision changes, or pale or blotchy skin after filler require urgent medical attention because vascular complications. While these are uncommon, they can be serious. The FDA treats dermal filler injections as medical procedures and advises patients to use licensed healthcare providers with appropriate training.

Plan the Treatment Around Your Face, Not Just the Date

The event date matters, but it’s only one part of the decision. Your provider also needs to consider the area being treated, the look you want, your treatment history, and which treatment is the right choice.

At Dignity Medical Aesthetics & Wellness in El Dorado Hills, injectable plans are personalized around facial anatomy and natural-looking results. Dignity offers Botox along with other wrinkle relaxers and several filler options for concerns such as lip definition, facial volume loss, and contour.

If an important date is on your calendar, mention it when you book. The earlier the team knows what you’re preparing for, the easier it is to recommend a treatment window that leaves room for results to develop and temporary side effects to settle.
